Pre-Game Jitters

Ugggghhhhhhhh.............!!!!  Sorry, just had to get that out.  Phew.  The World Cup has officially entered that stage where I am a nervous wreck until the final whistle is blown in the final.  Yes, I know, I'm far too emotionally invested in this sport but I just can't help it.  I was a complete and total lost cause once I figured out when I was 3 I'd get free donuts whenever my sister had a game.  Who knows what would have been if there were free donuts at her softball games?  Priorities, right? ;-)

You know you've got it bad when you're in Paris visiting the Eiffel Tower and you stall going from Tier 2 to the top because you have the perfect view looking down on the French National Team practicing and you briefly forget about everything else.  

No matter how many games I played, how many tournaments I was in, how many years I spent cheering on my sisters and how many thousands of miles I'll travel for this sport - Sudden Death will always be me undoing.  Two shootouts this weekend nearly killed me.  Maybe it's because I was a goalie for a long time or...well...you know, an entire career coming down to one kick...but I invariably spend every sudden death I watch hiding within my own shirt with only one eye peeking out or buried under every blanket within eye sight.  

What I'm trying to say is that I'm apologizing now for the complete and total hot mess I will be tomorrow during the US/Belgium match.  It's going to get ugly and I can't wait!  Bless you Team USA for distracting me from the fact that England scored two goals and didn't win a single match.  No matter what happens US Soccer has already won, no doubt about it.  Regardless, this will be me:

Where's the Sun?

Walking on Sunshine

We're definitely walking on sunshine here in the states with the US Men's National Team defying logic, science, gravity, etc. and making it out of the Group of Death.  This may be the first time in history that American soccer fans don't need to explicitly spell out to our fellow Americans why this is such an fete.  The phrase "we survived the Group of Death" requires no further explanation, LoL And to think - we did it without having to bite a single person :'-)

Sunshine

I'm officially too excited to function!  Roll on Germany vs. USA! I. am. PUMPED.

The nerves are raging and I'm too scared to proclaim the prizes I'll be giving out and sale going on in honor of this game because I don't want to jinx anything.  LoL  I know, I have serious issues :-/   All I need is for my boys to defy the laws of nature and tie/beat the #2 team in the world.  No biggie. I am very realistic and have my fingers crossed that we don't lose horribly and Portugal beats Ghana by a goal or two.  That's all I ask!  Now don't get me wrong - I have Germany picked for the Final, no question about that.  In fact I even have a little bet going on with one of my best/oldest friends, who is living in Berlin for the year with her family, that if Germany and the Netherlands meet in the final then I will hitchhike over for a visit this fall.  So basically it's a win/win situation for me - the US wins and my life-long devotion/participation in US Soccer comes full circle; Germany wins and I'm one step closer to being *forced* to go to Berlin.   LoL Don't worry y'all - this tournament and my insanity will be all wrapped in a matter of weeks ;-)

World Cup Alpha

Sometimes...sometimes...sometimes it's just impossible to put into words what would best be described in GIFS.  So, for lack of better words, this pretty much sums up my feels about arguably the greatest game of soccer in U.S. history, thus far.

This game was some serious David vs. Goliath madness, and I could not have been more stoked to see US soccer truly shock the world and, most importantly, have the entire country showing up to support our boys in this match for the ages.  Portugal, the #4 team in the World Cup, a favorite to make (at least) a repeat return to the Semi Finals, led by the greatest soccer player in the world at present - comes out and gets schooled by the US, the #13 team who wasn't even expected to win a single match.  It was beautiful, it was insane, it was soccer at its' finest, and no matter the final score - the US truly were the winners of the day.  

Again, sometimes GIFS are the only things that can truly explain something.
